What a Creosote Finding Actually Looks Like on Paper
Creosote gets discussed everywhere as a general fire hazard, but on an actual inspection report it is documented with more precision than that. Why Stage Matters More Than Presence
Every wood-burning system produces some creosote. The question an inspection answers is not whether creosote is present, but which stage it has reached, since each stage carries a different risk profile and a different removal method.
Stage one appears as a light, flaky deposit that brushes away easily during a standard sweep. This is the expected byproduct of a reasonably efficient fire and dry wood, and finding stage one creosote during an annual inspection is a normal result, not a red flag.
Stage two is harder and more tar-like, typically forming when fires burn cooler than they should, whether from wetter wood, restricted airflow, or a flue that is oversized for the appliance connected to it. Removing stage two deposits takes more aggressive brushing and sometimes multiple passes, and its presence on a report usually comes with a recommendation to look at what is causing fires to burn cooler in the first place.
Stage three is the glazed, dripping form that represents the most serious finding on any creosote related inspection. It forms when the conditions that produce stage two are left unaddressed across repeated burns, and it is difficult to remove with standard brushing alone. A stage three finding typically triggers a recommendation against continued use of the fireplace until it is professionally treated, since this stage ignites at temperatures a normal fire can reach without any unusual conditions.
How Location Changes the Finding
Where creosote accumulates matters as much as how much has built up. Deposits concentrated near the top of the flue, where temperatures drop first as smoke rises, are common and expected. Deposits found at a joint, a liner transition, or near a previously repaired section get flagged differently, since accumulation in these spots can indicate an airflow restriction or a structural gap that is trapping smoke rather than simple condensation.
How Each Stage Gets Removed
Removal method follows directly from the stage classification. Stage one deposits come off with standard chimney brushes sized to the flue, a routine part of an annual cleaning. Stage two typically needs a rotary cleaning head or repeated brushing passes to fully clear the harder coating, and a single pass that looks complete from the firebox opening does not always mean the full flue length is clear. Stage three requires a different approach: specialized chemical treatments applied to soften the glaze, followed by mechanical removal, sometimes across more than one visit for severe cases. In the most extreme situations, if the glazed creosote has already damaged the liner underneath it, removal alone does not resolve the finding, and a reline becomes part of the recommended repair rather than an optional upgrade.
The Failure Mode Behind a Chimney Fire
A chimney fire is not a separate event from creosote buildup, it is the direct consequence of it. When accumulated creosote ignites, temperatures inside the flue climb far beyond what the system experiences during normal use, and this is where the structural damage begins:
- - Clay tile liners crack under the sudden temperature spike, even when the tile itself was previously in sound condition
- Metal components warp or corrode faster afterward, since the fire changes the chemical composition of remaining deposits

Why We Recommend a Level 2 Inspection After Any Suspected Fire

A cleaning removes the remaining creosote but does not assess whether the liner survived the event intact. Using the fireplace again before that assessment is complete means using a system that may already be venting improperly.
What Prevention Actually Changes on Future Reports
The measures that reduce creosote formation are the same ones that keep future inspection findings at stage one instead of progressing further:
- - Burning wood that has been properly dried, rather than wood that still carries significant moisture
- Building and maintaining hot, well ventilated fires instead of smoldering, damped-down burns
- Scheduling a sweep and inspection on a consistent annual interval rather than waiting for a symptom
- Addressing draft problems as soon as they appear, since poor draft is one of the conditions that pushes creosote toward stage two and beyond
None of these are complicated changes, but they are the difference between a report that says stage one, routine cleaning, year after year and one that eventually documents a stage three finding with a recommendation against continued use.
When a Cleaning Alone Is Not Enough
Occasionally a sweep reveals that creosote has masked a separate defect, a hairline crack at a tile joint or a section where mortar has already started to fail underneath the deposit. In those cases, cleaning the flue is the first step, not the last one.
