Both openings need protection, and an inspection checks the whole chimney top, not just the flue the homeowner asked about.
Common Installation Mistakes We Correct
Not every cap failure starts with age or weather. A meaningful share of the cap related findings we log trace back to how the cap was installed in the first place. We regularly find caps sized for the wrong flue tile, held on with adhesive or friction rather than a proper mounting band, or mesh screening stapled onto the frame rather than integrated into the cap's construction. Part of every inspection is checking mounting method, not just whether a cap is present, since an improperly secured cap can create the same failure pattern as having no cap at all, just delayed by however long the mounting happens to hold.
