Altadena, the unincorporated foothill community above Pasadena
Altadena has many early 1900s Craftsman and masonry houses that still have their original brick chimneys. Since the January 2025 Eaton Fire, rebuild questions sit right next to routine cleaning here. For a standing home, we clean the firebox and flue, look for smoke and ash residue, and confirm the damper and cap are sound before you burn again. For a rebuild, we help you decide on the next fireplace, whether that is a restored masonry opening, a gas unit or an insert, and what its flue will need. Your notes cover the fireplace as it stands today and the options for the one that replaces it.

Pasadena runs from Linda Vista to Bungalow Heaven, and a fireplace here might be an original brick opening or a gas insert added last year. We clean what is there and check the parts that wear: firebrick, damper and smoke shelf, or on a gas unit, the burner, pilot and glass. Tile and stone surrounds get a look for loose pieces and cracked grout near the opening. If you want to update a surround, we measure the clearances to the mantel and trim first. Then we talk through finishes that keep the opening safe and suit the room. Notes and photos follow every visit.
